Flippin’ Sweet brings San Francisco style to Holdrege
Life in San Francisco for Jason Alexander and his wife Felicia was challenging. In order to minimize daycare expenses to afford their small apartment, they worked different shifts at Alcatraz State Park, literally passing their infant son between them when the boat from the mainland arrived.
In 2006, they learned through Felicia’s mom, Marilyn Fowler, that a café space was available in Bertrand, where Marilyn lived. After some thought, Jason and Felicia decided a better life awaited them in Nebraska and went into business with Marilyn, opening the Café Flippin’ Sweet just in time for the ice storm of New Year’s weekend, 2007. Despite the inauspicious beginning, the new enterprise steadily attracted customers from a wide area with its unique blend San Francisco-influenced sandwiches, pasta, pizza and desserts. By the fall of 2009, they found a large percentage of their clientele coming from Holdrege, and decided to take over a larger restaurant space there.
Open since November, the renamed Trattoria Flippin’ Sweet is open for dinner, with unique pizzas, calzones, salads and pasta dishes. The Caffe Flippin’ Sweet — a separate but related enterprise in the front part of the restaurant — serves baked goods, coffee, salads and sandwiches to the brunch and lunch crowd. Felicia creates the pastry masterpieces for both, from the crowd favorite whoopee pie, to the ooey, gooey monkey paws.
Flippin’ Sweet – both the Trattoria and the Caffe — are delightfully quirky. Jason and Felicia keep in touch with customers with “code word” specials imbedded in their Facebook postings, and regular tweets about nightly specials and how long the wait might be.
Since the Flippin’ Sweet opened, a lot of people who used to head for Kearney to dinner are staying In Holdrege. And that’s just one more thing about the restaurant that’s, well, flippin’ sweet.
