South Central Diesel invests in machinery & employees to get the job done right

posted to: Business news section by Holdrege Chamber of Commerce on 5/5/2011

South Central Diesel is a prosperous Holdrege business that has been quietly building working relationships with customers across the Midwest. Jim Wiser and his son, Mike, own and manage SCD, a business started in 1971. Jim's wife, Ann, manages the books. Although first started as a mechanic shop, SCD now specializes in turbo chargers and fuel-injection systems. The company also rebuilds diesel pumps and injectors, as well as diesel performance parts, shipping them all across its trade territory.

SCD has built relationships with Borg-Warner, Holset and Garrett, as an authorized distributor of turbochargers. The company is also an authorized service station which can perform warranty service on Stanadyne, Robert Bosch, Denso, Ambac and Delphi Diesel products. The manufacturers test SCD's machines every year to make sure they meet the manufacturer's high standards. "Some of the equipment we have, there are only a handful in the United States that have the same equipment," Mike said. And now, as new fuel efficiency standards require smaller engines with more horse power and less pollutants, SCD is setting itself up to be one of a select few in the nation that can work on and test the new common-rail fuel systems coming out on both gas and diesel engines.
The new style fuel injectors require work to be done in lab environments almost more sterile than hospitals. Dust particles smaller than the width of a single hair can cause problems with the crystals within the fuel injectors. Only 11 sites across the United States will be authorized by Bosch to work on these new style fuel injectors and SCD is one of them.

SCD has established a large, loyal customer base which allows the company to invest in these new, high-tech machines, but SCD also puts great investment into the employees that operate these machines. It takes two to three years for new employees to be trained on the technicalities and intricacies of the highly calibrated machines.
"We're very picky when we hire help," Jim said. "Sometimes it takes us a year or two to find someone."But when they find the right person, they invest heavily in that person, sending them to training schools across the county.
This dedication to training has created loyal employees that do things right the first time. Of South Central's 11 employees, several of them have been with the company more than 10 years."We're lucky," Mike said. "We're blessed with very, very good people.""They work, they get things done," Jim added. Whenever Jim hires a new employee, he shows them his motto, "If you can't do it right, don't do it." That attention to detail creates the loyal customer base SCD depends on."We have a lot of loyal repeat customers and we're growing new customers all the time," Mike said. Many of those new customers are coming from Colorado and Missouri. And Jim and Mike know that dedication to customer service is vitally important in creating lasting relationships. They ship packages out daily and put in extra effort to make sure packages are shipped out as early as possible.

"We appreciate every customer," Jim said. "I went into a John Deere dealer shop when I was out on the road and he said, 'You know, your son treats me like I am the only customer you've got.' That's why we're where we're at. Service is everything. Everybody can buy it. Everybody can sell it, but if you've got no service, that's the difference."
