Groups Partner to Offer Summer Youth Entrepreneur Class

The YMCA of the Prairie and 4-H are teaming up to offer a special entrepreneur class for children ages 10-14 this summer.The 4 Real Kids 4-H Entrepreneur Class is a six-week program that equips middle-school age students with the knowledge and skills to start their own business or improve an existing one. Participants will learn how to turn their passions into a business idea.
This class will meet on Wednesday afternoons from 1-3 p.m. May 25-June 29 at the YMCA of the Prairie in Holdrege. Below is what will be discussed each week:
May 25 - Entrepreneurship 101 w/ parents
June 1 - Savvy Biz Kidz
June 8 - Big Ideas!
June 15 - Marketing, Marketing, Marketing w/ parents
June 22 - Where’s the Money?
June 29 - ’Mock’ Entrepreneurship Expo w/ local business community
The class will include kids showcasing their businesses at Swedish Days, Farmer’s Markets and the Phelps County Fair where students will market their product or service businesses with hands-on experiences, real-life marketing and customer service skills.
This class uses the Nebraska State 4-H developed EntrepreneurShip Investigation Manual. In addition to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension, and the YMCA, this class is also in partnership with South-Central Economic Development District and the P-K Partnership.
Pre-registration for the class is encouraged by Monday, May 23, and can be done at the YMCA of the Prairie at 1415 Broadway in Holdrege or by calling the YMCA at (308) 995-4050.
The class will be instructed by Janita Pavelka with UNL Extension staff involved in the team effort. Students interested is learning more about this program or starting their own business are encouraged to stop by the YMCA May 9-15 to see examples of current youth businesses.
